Remember how for years, people were wondering what would happen with Glenn on The Walking Dead show? Because his character was killed off in the comics, but the show took so many different turns than the source material. It became a real question of if the same fate was in store for him there. It got people wondering what that story would look like if he was still around.
This is important because it meant that viewers could not spoil the show for themselves by reading the comic. Not about EVERYTHING. Some fates overlapped, but not ALL of them. And often not in the same ways.
The clever thing to do would have been to make it seem like he was doomed, to misdirect the audience. While leaving a little bit of nagging doubt in the back of people's minds. Get them questioning, keep them paranoid. Which keeps them invested, and watching more.
Then after a "SIKE!" fake-out death, and then purposely stalling the outcome of who Negan killed for months, they... killed off Glenn in the same way, at the exact same part we all expected.
A lot of people stopped watching TWD after that. Not because they were sad about a fictional character dying again. They were fed up with being jerked around. It was obvious that the people in charge of telling that story had no plan, and no respect for the time and investment of the audience that cared about it.
